The puppet masters of Suna were infamous. From Chiyo to Sasori to Kankurou, the puppet masters twisted their strings and made Suna dance, made Suna fight and grow and become strong. They gathered bone and blood, sand and wind, and they bound it all together into puppets that carried the weight of the world on their shoulders.
It was Chiyo’s puppet first. Her first-born son was dead, rotting in the ground, deep enough that there were drops of moisture. She left Suna, bitter regret and sweet hate flooding her chakra, and when she came back, older and infinitely more weary, she carried a scroll with a single puppet.
It was Sasori’s puppet second. He found the scroll hidden amongst other puppet-scrolls, like a tree unseen for the forest. Sasori saw it, though, and when he left Suna, full of sour pride and salty desire, he carried the puppet scroll like a trophy of his childhood.
It was Kankurou’s puppet third (and last). He gained it during a fight, tearing it from another man’s back and claiming it as his own. He returned to Suna, because he could never leave Suna for long, because there was too much love in his soul, a love he couldn’t ever taste, because he never realized it was there. He carried the scroll home with him, swung over his shoulder, bumping against his back with every step he took. He’d show it to Gaara, and he’d use it to protect Gaara, because that was his duty as an elder brother.
Sakumo was a good puppet.
