I'm sorry. Really, I am, but it just...It just... Gah. Sorry?
Vague spoilers for KH and KH2. Sorta.
Riku had never lived his life by feeling guilty. He'd done what had needed to be done, no backward glances, no questions asked.
No saying sorry.
He'd done things he'd felt bad for, in hindsight, but he'd never stopped to think on it. He'd never stopped to cry, or scream, or beat his hands bloody, because there was no point to that. Things were waiting for him, the entire future, resting right on the edge of the horizon, in the place between the sky and the ocean, and he wanted, more than anything, to reach that place.
He would reach it, no matter what.
So he did whatever was needed. He betrayed Sora, but it wasn't really betraying, was it? It wasn't betraying, because he said it wasn't. He said it wasn't betraying Sora, because it was all for Kairi, and soon, Sora would understand. Sora would see that it was all to save Kairi, and once Kairi was saved, Riku could save Sora, too. And then they'd float away, on a raft made of blood and tears and broken hearts, all mended together, because they would have eternity together, just the three of them.
Didn't Sora see?
So Riku didn't feel guilty, not when he was taking the Keyblade out of Sora's hands, because this was to help them both. Didn't Sora see? Sora was too busy being scared for Kairi and the worlds to be scared for himself, and if Sora wasn't scared for himself, Sora would get himself killed. Sora was too brave and scared by half, and Sora wasn't strong enough to carry it all. Riku had to help, had to pull his weight and Sora, and then they'd get Kairi back.
Didn't Sora see?
So Riku didn't think back on it, not much, when he helped close the door. And when he was stuck there, in the dark and light and everlasting eternity that screamed in his ears until he was bleeding, he didn't think on it, much. Except sometimes, there was a touch of a whisper of a thought in his mind, somewhere behind the dark that kept climbing in, hand over hand, in his eyes.
Sometimes, when Riku would pause for a half-breath, seven steps behind the King, six steps ahead of the screaming dark, he'd feel a little guilty.
Maybe Sora never did see.
So, Riku would just have to help Sora see. He'd have to get Sora back, lead him, hand-in-hand, to the island, where Kairi was. Then Sora would see, and Riku wouldn't feel this gnawing hunger, deep in his gut.
He'd wake Sora up, not with a kiss, because this wasn't the thing of fairytales, but with a fight. He'd take the darkness, and he'd use it, twist it and manipulate it and make it his, make it him, and then Sora could wake up, and they could go home together.
Maybe, they'd be able to go home in the light.
So Riku would be Sora's knight, just like the old stories about a lord and knights that would follow him to his death. He'd clutch his Soul Eater, and maybe his hands would shake a little, but that wouldn't matter, because he'd do this, all of this, for Sora and Kairi. He'd close his eyes, so he couldn't see them, and they couldn't see him, but he'd jump off the cliff, and he'd dive into the dark, and he'd do it all, all of it, without a second thought.
He'd do it for Kairi, and he'd do it for Sora.
Couldn't Sora see?
sorry...
